"Margaret Fuller at 200: An Inspiration for Her Time and Ours"
Fritz Fleischmann
After Fuller died in a shipwreck off Fire Island, Ralph Waldo Emerson noted in his journal, "I have lost in her my audience." His sense of loss was felt by many: Margaret Fuller (1810-1850) was the leading feminist thinker of the emerging women's movement, a path-breaking social critic and journalist, translator, editor, foreign correspondent, and historian of the Italian Revolution of 1848. She charmed, inspired, and outraged her contemporaries -- one of them categorized humanity into "men, women, and Margaret Fuller" --, and she continues to inspire new generations of women and men today.
Today's sermon is part of the year-long, nation-wide celebration of the 200th anniversary of Fuller's birth; since Fuller was a Boston Unitarian, many of these events take place in our area. Celebrations include a conference at the Massachusetts Historical Society (April 7-9); the keynote on Thursday, April 7 at 6 p.m. is free and open to the public. Click here for further information.
First Parish member Fritz Fleischmann teaches English at Babson College and has spent many happy years in the company of this extraordinary woman.
FIRST PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS
Project Bread Walk for Hunger – May 2nd
Today, Massachusetts estimates that over 500,000 people in this state alone are struggling to put food on the table. Project Bread is dedicated to finding creative ways to take measures that reduce hunger across the state. Project Bread has developed and supports four distinct programs (detailed in the April 2010 FPUU Newsletter). But they need our support.
Team First Parish is "on the move" again this year to support those who are less fortunate by walking in the annual Walk for Hunger on Sunday May 2nd. With the support of generous people like you we raised $3,931.00 in 2009! You can make a difference. Join Team First Parish for a fun filled day for this worthwhile cause. The 20-mile Walk route weaves through Boston, Brookline, Newton, and Cambridge, and includes entertainment and free snacks along the way. We will gather in front of the State House and start walking at 8:00 am. Walk guides, registration forms and pledge sheets are available on-line.
Of course you can also participate by sponsoring someone in our community who is walking. No contribution is too small!

CHILDREN'S RE this Sunday, April 18, begins upstairs in the sanctuary. After the Moment for All Ages, all children 8th grade and younger are invited to the vestry for an activity that goes along with our Rotation story of "Sand." The activity will end as coffee hour begins.
EARTH DAY Worship Service is Sunday April 25, for all ages. We will be learning about and exploring the idea of "40/40/40" -- 40 years (of Earth Day) / 40 people / 40 days. Further explanation will be found on an insert in this Sunday's order of service. Take a look and then plan to come to church on April 25.
I am looking forward to being with you. Jeanette Ruyle, worship service leader on 4/25/10.
THANK YOU to all who brought in the many, many cans and containers of food for the Easter Hunt and for the Medfield Food Cupboard. Fantastic! Thank you to those who hid all of these cans: Cody Ballard and his friend visting from Spain, Chris Conley, Jay Bibel (hid the plastic eggs), and anyone else who was an unknown hider. Thank you to Coleman Toomey who transported all the food to the Food Cupboard-- what a load!
See the RE whiteboard near the vestry entrance for summary about RE.
